In this paper the experience of the book,the old Man and the Sea, will be presented.The theme will be stated first. Then a brief summary of the book will be shown. At last, the implications of will be discussed in two aspects: the book ofthe old Man and the Seaand general reading.

The theme of the book is that it is better not to back down when we face difficulties.It reveals that persistence is usually paid off with an award of a wonderfullife.

In this book, the old man called Santiago shows what persistence is. Persistencemeans never to give up, which makes us strong enough to conquer all thedifficulties. He made a decision to fish on his own. However, things did not goas he expected. He doubted about his decision during the adventure. It is persistencethat helps him to carry on. Eventually he went back with the backbone of the bigfish successfully.

It can be seen that the persistence is of great importance to achieve goals. It is just like what the old man said: "A man can be destroyed but not defeated".Confronted with the challenges in our lives, it is better not to succumb todifficulties.

Literaturecomes from life and it can apply to life. It is conceivable that the pursuit tobe a he-man helps the old man persists. He has not changed the desire to provehis ability in fishing. Although people were made fun of the old man because hehad not caught any fish during forty days, the old man disregarded what otherssaid and determined to finish what he has started. It is implies that insistencecontributes to success in the face of personal pressures.

The old he-man gives readers encouragement and inspiration. It has been widelynoted that, a winner is a dreamer who never gives up. As to study, what mattersis not what we learn, but the attitude when we are learning something. It isadvisable to persist till everything is understood. It does not matter what wethink, but doings afterwards.

As for general literature, one benefit of reading is that it can give us encouragement. In the era of information explosion, it is suggested to readmore books. It is a good choice to put a stop to a hectic life and pick up abook to refresh yourself.
