一、Warm-Up
1. animation n.动画；动画片；动画制作
There are a great many animation studios all over the world. 世界上有许多优秀的动画工作室。
a. animation动画片，动漫；动画制作
我们之前熟悉的cartoon更多指的是2D，kid-friendly的卡通片，而诸如皮克斯工作室等制作的现代化的3D动画等叫做animation.
b. animated adj. 动画的
animated film/picture 动画电影；电影大奖中的最佳长篇动画是 animated feature.
2. stand out 突出
Pixar is an animation studio that stands out above the rest. 皮克斯是一个突出于其他同行的动画工作室。
There are many great animation studios all over the world, but there's one that stands out above the rest. 世界上有许多很棒的动画工作室，但是皮克斯动画工作室却是最出彩。
a. stand out 突出，出彩，显著；
当你想要表现某物/人比其他都优秀，那用这个词组就是妥妥的了~

b. stand out 另一个意思是“ to be very noticeable （醒目）”。不是由于优秀而突出，而仅仅只是看起来比较显眼。

The misspelled words with wavy red lines under them really stand out on the screen. 被红色波浪线标出的拼写错误在屏幕上看起来超级醒目。

4. little-known adj.鲜为人知的
What are the little-known secrets of Pixar's creative success? 皮克斯创造性成功背后有哪些鲜为人知的秘密呢？
little-known 从单词构成就能推断出是极少的人知道，也就是鲜为人知的。
那么类似的词还有：

5. take risks 冒险
The first thing Pixar has done well is to take risks and be okay with failure. 皮克斯做的比较好的第一件事情就是勇于冒险并接受失败。

Both risk and reward are high. 风险与回报都很高。

6. fair share 大量的
Pixar has seen their fair share of failed projects. 皮克斯也经历了许多失败的项目。
fair share 是个名词词组，意思是“大量”，是一个纯美式的用法。

He gets his fair share of attention, too. 他也得到了大量的关注。
7. innovative adj. 创新的
Pixar has its own rules for fostering an innovative culture. 皮克斯有自己培养创新文化的机制。
a. innovative adj. 创新的；后面可以搭配technology, culture, ideas, methods etc.
innovation n. 创新，革新
innovate v. 创新
b. foster v.
1) 培养；foster an interest 培养一个兴趣
2) 养育；foster a child 养一个孩子
8. embrace v. 欣然接受，乐意采纳
The reason why Pixar has achieved more is because they embrace failure and they see it as part of their ability to innovate. 皮克斯比其他工作室成就更多的原因是他们能积极得接受失败，并将之视为促成革新的能力。
a. embrace v. 欣然接受，乐意采纳;比accept 多了一丝积极得意味哦；后面常跟的名词有failure, opportunity, chance, suggestions等。
embrace failure 接受失败
This is a great suggestion that I would embrace. 我很乐意接受这个建议。
Embracing ignorance? That's your big solution？接受无知？这就是你的解决办法吗？
相比accesp, embrace 所表示的“接受”是欣然的，乐意的；在这个复述句里，接受无知却用了embrace，有没有感受到说话者的一丝丝讽刺/愤怒的意味呢？
b. embrace 还有“拥抱”的意思
The boy embraced his mother warmly. 这个男孩热情的拥抱了他的妈妈。
我们总是很热情的接受最新的科技。
We are always eager to embrace the latest technology.
他们拥抱后才说再见的。
They embraced each other before saying goodbye.
9. toss out 扔掉
The filmmaker tossed out a whole movie and completely remade it just nine months before the release date. 就在发行日期的九个月前，电影制作人丢弃了整部电影，然后重新制作了一个全新的版本。
下次表达“丢掉，丢弃”的意思时，除了throw away, 也可以用toss out 啦。
Can you just toss out those old and useless chairs? 你就不能扔掉那些又旧又没用的椅子吗？
10. tell v. 辨认，知道，看出来
Does it work? You can tell from the results that it works/does. 他有用吗？从结果来看，它奏效了。
tell 对我们来说已经非常熟悉了，但是除了“告诉”之外，它还有另一个常用意思哦~在这里，它是“看出来（to know)，辨别出来（to recognize)”的意思。
I can tell that you are angry at me. 我能看出来你在生我的气。
How can you tell the difference between a twin? 你怎么区分双胞胎啊？
These two mugs look the same. How can you tell which one is yours? 这两个马克杯看起来一模一样，你怎么知道哪个是你的啊？
我能看出来你不开心。
I can tell you are not happy.
两部电影都很棒，很难讲哪个更好一点。
Both movies are amazing. It's hard to tell which one is better.
二、Practice
1. 在我看来，皮克斯动画工作室比其他的都好。
In my opinion, Pixar Animation Studio stands out above the others.
2. 就故事叙事方式和动画制作技术来讲，他们是最创新的。
In terms of storytelling and animated technology, they are the most innovative.
3. 我听说他们勇于冒险，而且能乐观的接受失败。
I have heared that they are willing to take risks and can embrace failure.
勇于冒险 be willing to take risks
乐观接受失败 embrace failure; 这里没有加positively 是因为embrace 本身就带有“欣然地，乐意地接受”的含义。
4. 我能看出来他们在每一部电影上都投入了巨大的努力。
I can tell that they have put significant efforts into each movie.
投入巨大的努力 put great / significant/ huge efforts
5. 皮克斯鲜为人知的成功秘诀对于个人成长也奏效。
The little-known secrets of Pixar's success also work for individual development.
work 本身是工作的意思，但也常用于表示“可以奏效，可以运转”的意思。
Tears don't work for me. 眼泪对我可没用。
