Apocalypse

Up till now, none of my dreams had its own post because they all happened a very long time ago and I was unable to trace back all the little details. It is puzzling, as I remember much more details than the actual plot or storyline of the dream. It is like if I don't just dream with my brain or my subconsciousness, I was dreaming with all of my senses, the smell, the touch, the sound, the taste, the colours, the fear and the excitement. Those senses help me to grasp to the little details, to a certain flashback, a certain imagery of the dream which replays itself in my head like a gif. The next dream occurred two nights ago, and it had pushed my senses to the extremes.

I was in Europe, together with my boyfriend, we were here to celebrate a wedding of a friend. We arrived days earlier to help with the arrangement and had two days left before the actual ceremony. So we decided to have a short trip to one of the small islands in the Mediterranean (this island probably doesn't exist in real life, I can't check as I don't remember the name of it...). We took a train in the afternoon to Italy, upon arrival, we rent a motorcycle. I had no idea how we managed to cross the sea on a bike but when we finally arrived on the island, it was pitch black. We got lost in trying to get to our hotel, and my boyfriend was riding the bike on all the non-motorbike-friendly lanes with scary slope. It started to rain and I was inpatient, I wanted to get inside before my clothes got damp. We finally found our hotel next to a little hill, and I urged him into a little bar next door. It was warmly lit inside, maybe a little too dark. The walls were painted red, and there were wooden tables and chairs scattered around the hall. We had dinner and a warm drink before heading to the hotel. I remember there was also a colourful lottery machine in the bar.

The next morning, with the sun came a fine day. We decided to take a tour around the island and ended up on the little hill next to the hotel. There was an old couple talking in the field. The lady was wearing a pink top with a pastel yellow cardigan over her shoulder, and the old man was wearing a shirt with blue pattern on it. My boyfriend went to talk with them (something he would never ever do in real life...), and I decided to lie down and take a nap. I put a light blanket or a scarf over myself to prevent overheating and sun burn, I shielded my eyes with it as well. I could hear them talking, the old man was explaining how this field was a graveyard, an immense one left from either the war or from an old hospital. He then changed the topic and asked my boyfriend: 'Now where is your girlfriend?' He turned around and saw me lying there, and out of no reason, he started to cover me up with dirt and a shovel. My boyfriend, being as childish and mischievous as he is, joined in to bury me alive. I was getting very angry, but didn't want to blow up as I knew they were only joking and having fun. But as the dirt started to cover my face and I began to have difficulty breathing, I sit up suddenly and glared at my boyfriend. I got up and rushed my way back to the hotel. I turned around in the middle of the field and shouted at him to bring the blanket back.

I took a shower, and decided to talk some senses into my boyfriend to make him realise that burying me alive was absolutely not a fun activity, as I was slowly suffocating inside. The discussion ended up in a row and he rushed out. As I was preparing myself to be more presentable, I persuaded my raging self that I had been too aggressive and unreasonable and I should go after him to apologise. I found him outside, in another part of the hill talking to the old man again, who had a laptop and a map. They were sitting next to a massive whole on the ground, and I went up to see what was on the screen of the laptop. It was an article explaining and warning that there was a comet spinning towards the earth, and it would smash and hit us in a few days time. The astronomers predicted several points of contact which could be hit by the comet and the giant whole in front of us was one of them. I wasn't too concerned at first. My boyfriend continued his exciting discussion with the old man about the other possible hitting points, and I asked the elder if the comet would really hit this little island, and he said yes, explaining all the scientific reasons behind. I was terrified. I could feel a chilling dampness rising in my spine and I told my boyfriend that I wanted to get back to mainland Europe as quickly as possible.

I couldn't remember what happened right after that, but I somehow ended up in a black helicopter up in the air, and I was sitting right next to the pilot. I looked down and saw the beautiful landscape of the island, patches of field sewed with each other, some yellow some green, some were changing colour in the wind and under the cloud. There were trees and bushes here and there, decorating the massive fields, it was beautiful. We headed for the sea shore, where there were many tourists, some were sun bathing on the beach, others were playing in the water. I could see the parasols, the benches, the swim tube and the water donuts. There was also a little ferry arriving at the dock, packed with tourists. I was enjoying the view when a male voice entered the background. One minute before I was sitting in the front, and now I was right next to the door, which was wide open and my legs were dangling outside. The voice acted like a narrator and I was apparently in a nature program like on the Discovery channel. The only problem was I was not only watching the show, I was in it, experiencing it and living it.

The narrator started off by explaining how the crush of the comet on earth would bring irreversible disaster and catastrophe to the island. If anyone was unlucky to get hit right by the comet, the body would endure such high pressure and stress that everything inside it would be crushed to be completely flat. As the narration went on, I could see the comet coming towards us in an incredible speed, like it was going to hit us right on the face at any time. We moved to another angle to discover the effect of the collision on a human body and I was surprised to see my boyfriend being the model (I was only surprised, not horrified, probably because I knew it was only a show, or because I was still secretly mad at him and didn't care if he gets to be crushed by a comet). To better illustrate the effect, both of them were still in the air when the collision took place. As the comet crushed into him, it was like if he was being pushed and pressed again and again into it. I could see his back deforming and his muscles and bones twisting and cracking under the pressure.

After this terrific demonstration, the narration continued. Once the comet hit the ground, the energy would be immense and could create great disturbance both to the upper crust of the earth and the sea. It could generate massive water current and waves which would splash the sea shore. The helicopter was above the water now, and I could see the sea, the once calm, welcoming sky-blue sea was becoming violent and uncontrollable with deep dark water ready to devour and swallow everything within its reach. The waves were huge, high like a five-story building, as wide as I could see. The strength and energy it had and produced upon hitting the bank was unbelievable. At one point, I could even see the wild current under the surface of the ocean as they raced, fought, chased and intercepted each other towards the shore, the bubbles created by all the wave were sizzling towards the surface.

The helicopter regained its height and I could once again see the shore and heard the voice saying that the energy of the collision would also generate intense waves travelling through the crust of the earth, throwing everything on it into the air. The tourists, the parasols, the benches and the cars were now all thrown up to the sky and frozen once they had reached the highest point. We flew around them. I could see their faces, the terror, the shock, the panic, the fear and the despair. All faces distorted by the speed and the pressure. Upon reaching the highest altitude possible, they would start falling. And there they were, falling rapidly, gaining speed as they went down. There was shouting, shrieking, crying everywhere. And they all ended suddenly, as the owner of the voice splashed on the ground or on the sea, the pressure and the collision killed them instantly. All of the falling started of with slow motion, but ended with a blink. The cars fell apart as they reached the ground, exploded with all they had left in them.

The waves continued, we were losing height and descending towards the mad sea. The sky darkened and a storm was gathering. The cloud thickened, lit only by the lightening which seemed to rip the sky open. I could hear the deafening thunder, so near that I was afraid we would be hit by the lightning. The helicopter was so low that I thought we could be caught by the wave who would clench its mighty watery fist and ingulf us into the heart of the dark ocean. As I sat on the edge of the door, feet still dangling, I could feel the wind together with the rain dashing and rushing towards me, threatening to bring me down with them. I could barely open my eyes against them. It was so loud, the helicopter, the roaring of the ocean, and the growling of the thunder. I could smell the sea, damp and rank with the fish. I thought I could also taste it as I licked my lips, the saltiness exploded from the tip of the tongue and spreaded to every corner of the mouth reaching as far as the throat. I didn't know how long we could possible last in a weather and condition like that, the helicopter could fall at any moment. Somehow I was not panicking, not even that frightened. I clenched my hands on the doors, looking down to the sea. There, hundreds of people, living beings had been devoured in a matter of seconds. All those people, who were alive and happy seconds before, were now lying somewhere, bloody and lifeless. They were so still, yet the ocean and the sky were still not satisfied, they were still furious. I was both admiring and fearing the power and the strength of the nature, which made me feel so insignificant, so tiny, so hopeless and helpless. All I could do was to cling myself to the helicopter and condole the deceased.

Finally we left the raging storm, back to the centre of the island, to the city, where everything was still calm and comforting. The storm which was left behind us, seemed like an illusion, like it never existed. It was pitch black again, late in the evening and passengers were walking on the streets which were well lit by the lamps. It certainly had rained here, I could see the wet ground, the occasional little puddle of water reflecting the moon and the light. We were descending and ready to land, when the alarm sounded. Red light was flashing in the entire cabin, the control panel was flashing and beeping, all the signs and buttons were lit. I finally realised that I was sitting in the pilot position when the robotic female voice spoke calmly: 'Attention please, attention please. Unable to land, unable to land.' I was confused and frozen, I had never ever known anything about how to control a helicopter, I haven't even seen anything similar in movies. How on earth was I suppose to land this fucking machine? And where was the pilot?

As I fell with an increasing speed, there was not much time left for me to think. I saw a stick like the gear stick in a car with a red button on top of it and decided to give it a try. I grabbed my hand around it, put my thumb on the button and prayed for this to work. I pressed down the button and tried to lift the stick as much as possible. Miraculously, the falling speed decreased and I landed safely somewhere in a park (I was so surprised that I didn't hit any trees - there were so god damn many of them...).

It took me a while to gather myself together to climb out of the helicopter. My vision was a bit blurring and I was dizzy. I could see someone in a uniform, a policeman or a guard, and I shouted that I needed help. As my feet touched the steady ground I had been craving and longing, me legs finally started to give in to the fear and the panic. I made only a few steps towards the man before falling on my knees. And I couldn't stand up, it was like I had no bones left in my legs. I could see crowd gathering around me, talking and speaking something I could not hear. I felt like everything was turning around me in circles, and I finally burst into tears. I was crying super super hard, like I was going to cry my lungs out and drain the every last drop of water in my body with the tears. I was not sure what I was crying for. I was scared, terrified and paralysed for sure, but they were not the only reasons. I was crying for those who lost their lives in that disaster, I was crying for my own helplessness, my weakness, and the hopelessness of human beings in front of the all too mighty mother nature. I heard urgent foot steps and siren, police cars arrived, the top lights flashing. Then I saw my boyfriend running towards me, totally freaked out, all pale and white. He knelt beside me and hugged me. I reached for his hand, clenching it with all the strength I had left in me, and went on crying.

I couldn't remember the rest as it was very blurry and my head was hurting, it was so heavy my neck started to hurt from keeping it in place. I was carried back to the hotel, where I had a drink and some hot food. My boyfriend helped me to have a relaxing bath before moving me to the comforting bed. I remember that we left for mainland Europe the next morning, heading to the wedding. That was when the alarm woke me up.

You could see that there are much more details in this one, as it is very recent and I managed to retell it immediately to my boyfriend right after I was awake, who suggested me to write it down. As I recall the dream, more details would pop up. There are definitely details which didn't exist in the dream but were invented by my brain, but I alone could not really tell the difference. The feeling and the senses were exactly the same as I had experienced in the dreams, they are the elements which never fade away, reminding me of the joy, the sorrow and the despair of all my vivid dreams.
