In a continuation of w3.pok.ibm.com's coverage of October's National Disability Employment Awareness Month, site communications had the opportunity to talk with Jian Wang, a deaf co-op here in Poughkeepsie.

Jian started his co-op assignment this past April in the tools department. In this position, he works on various projects, including updating an existing Lotus Notes Database; developing new tools for Lotus Notes, per client requests; and supporting general tools. In order to complete these projects, Jian needs to communicate often with his coworkers, which at times poses a communication difficulty due to his deafness. While Jian and his coworkers can use Sametime and writing to communicate -- and he can arrange for an interpreter for meetings -- everyday, casual conversations amongst him and his coworkers are limited.

Recently, Jian's Manager, John Plew, and four others in his department began taking an American Sign Language class in order to better communicate with Jian and another deaf employee in their group, Al Noll. The class is once a week and runs for a 14-week period.

"It's been great having Jian and Al on my team," says John Plew. "It's a real growth experience for myself and the others. I'm very proud and happy IBM has such a strong legacy of diversity hiring."

Jian's coworkers agree. "For me, it's been fantastic," Liza Davila states. "I've practiced signing a lot with Jian and Al, and they are really patient with me. I'm glad I can have more frequent conversations with them now." Jian couldn't be happier with seeing his coworkers reaching out to make an effort to better their relationships.

"Casual conversation is very important for worker-to-worker relationships. More than anything, my department colleagues are making my co-op experience much more enjoyable," he explains. "I'm really happy here. Now, I am able to make new friends, go to lunch, or out after work, without having to worry about being able to communicate without an interpreter. I think it's great IBM provides their employees support and offers opportunities for talented employees with disabilities."

Jian immigrated to the United States from Shanghai, China in 1995 to pursue a higher education and graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with a bachelor's degree in information technology (I/T) in 2002. Since joining IBM, he has continued taking classes at RIT through RIT's distance learning program, working toward his master's degree in I/T. He will graduate in November 2004. 1995年,
