C2-Advanced-Personality and Leadership

Dialogue 对话

A. John, our current CFO is going to be leaving in 6 months and we need to find

a new one.

B. Well, that’s why you hired me as your executive search consultant – to help

you find the right person for the job.

A. It’s a tall order though. The right person for our job isn’t going to be found

willy-nilly. We have very high expectations for someone who runs a corporation

like ours.

B. Of course. The first thing I want to really focus on with you in personality.

A. …personality? We’re talking about someone who will be in charge of billion

dollar balance sheets and financial planning. I’m not looking for miss

congeniality. We need to find someone with the right background and pedigree.

B. Absolutely, and part of what creates someone’s background and pedigree is

their personality.

A. I’m listening.

B. Studies over the years have shown that for leadership positions such as

these, personality is often more important than intelligence.

A. What sort of personality is best suited for a position like this?

B. There are a number of traits we look for. Emotional stability and being able

to withstand a large amount of stress is really important. More than this, a high

degree of emotional intelligence and extraversion is important – a CFO not only

needs to be able to lead a team but also connect with, motivate, and inspire

individual employees.

A. What else?

B. Open-mindedness and a degree of flexibility are useful in being able to roll

with the punches that come with the position. And finally, I would say that a

strong methodical nature coupled with lots of motivation will ensure that they

can handle the nuts and bolts of managing such a large operation.

A. I see where you’re coming from. Both someone’s experiences and their

disposition need to be a good fit for the position.

B. Exactly right.

Exercises

Culture

Miss Congeniality originates from the beauty pageants “Miss America” and “Miss Universe”.  Chosen by the other contestants, a girl is crowned Miss Congeniality because she has demonstrated that she is friendly, helpful, genuine, and outgoing during the competition.  Outside of the beauty pageant world, we use Miss Congeniality to describe someone with these kinds of positive dispositions.
