Apparently the woman was a loose character and had married three times, having three sons by three different husbands——quite a record in these days.

loose: having or involving an attitude to sexual relationships that people consider to be immoral. 例如a young man of loose morals.

此外loose做形容词还可表示 not in any player's control无球员控制的,例如a loose ball

用法是loose something off(at somebody or something)

loose作名词有一个固定表达是on the loose: having escaped from somewhere; free做这个意思讲的时候相当于at large

造句:She was considered a loose character.

...and the state courtesans were at their beck and call.

at somebody's beck and call: always ready to obey somebody's orders随时待命

Whether it casts a slur on his character or not, however, is a matter of opinion.

slur: an unfair remark about somebody or something that may damage other people's opinion of them诽谤、诋毁,cast a slur on somebody=insult
