TGG - Chapter14

1 - 阅读感悟

(1)人生有起有落,十四章写的就是苏东坡的“落”。本章按照时间顺序,从讲述苏东坡被捕的导火索开始,按逮捕——入狱——审判——判后释放及其影响依次来写。

SU TUNGPO, to use the poet's own expression, had gone on "spitting out flies found in one's food," and had so far escaped scot-free. But the hundredth time he "spat," he was caught.

常在河边走哪有不湿鞋,林语堂用苏东坡讲过的话"spitting out flies found in one's food"来开头,引人入胜。

(2)文中林语堂用了同义替换的表达,例如“小人”,文中用了petty men和little fellow的表达;表示“命偿”时,用到了should pay with his life和should be killed。

关于同义替换,读经济学人时感觉更明显,例如Expelling Chinese people from Chinese cities一文中,“民工”的表达方式有rural folk who move to the cities; migrants from the countryside;和 settlers from eleswhere。

(3)

Some of these poems were highly deceptive and had hidden points to be appreciated only when one understood the historical references.

仿佛找到了我读不透诗词的原因。

另外最近了解到“词链儿”这个词,简言之就是要把字词放到句子和特定语境中传来起来学习记忆,比如上述这个句子,可以提炼一个模型出来:sth. is/does ... only when ....然后把自己想表达的内容嵌入句子内,如Children can fully understand their parents only when they become someone's parents.

2 - Central Question

Why Su Tungpo is arrested for a trial and what is the result of the trial?

3 - Words

(1)subject

文中多次出现“the duty of a subject”。subject常用的意思有主题、话题、科目、对象等,在文中用了citizen的意思,表示“公民,臣民,国民”。

(2)amount to

① to produce (a total) when added together

② to be the same in meaning or effect as sth.

文中用的是第二个意思,分别用在“It all amounted to this:... ...”;“This practically amounted to her dying wish.”

(3)incorrigible

意思是not able to be corrected or changed 屡教不改的,不可救药的(常为幽默用法)。这个词源与correct相同,可联系起来记忆。

文末,苏东坡重获自由后仍这样形容自己“I am really incorrigible.”,可见其心“大”。林语堂也多次写到,对于表达心中所想,苏东坡并不care后果,这又与文章开头"spitting out flies found in one's food"相呼应。
