The Chinese sage, who accomplishs the synthesis in theory as well in deed, is characterized as "sageliness within and kingliness without". In other words, he perfects self-cultivation spiritually and functions in society. And the mission of Chinese philosiphy is exactly to explore the Tao of "sageliness within and kingliness without". That resembles the Platonic philosopher-king superficially. But actually the idea held by Plato is the same as the ancient Taoist. Yet the latter joined the main tradition of Chinese philosophy in later times.
